As the equity market's profitability nears its all-time highs, Goldman Sachs recently shared some stocks that could see big growth over the next 12 months. In 2024, Kostin expects margin expansion will continue to support ROE growth. In the same report, Goldman Sachs shared its rebalanced ROE growth basket of stocks, which contains 50 names selected for their expected profit growth over the next 12 months. Rising growth fears, solar compensation cutbacks and rising interest rates sank solar stocks last year, but they've since made a comeback. Consensus estimates for the financials sector reveal that most analysts expect ROE growth to remain flat in the same time period.

Martin Shkreli, former chief executive officer of Turing Pharmaceuticals AG, exits court in New York, US, on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2023. What does former President Donald Trump have in common with "Pharma bro" Martin Shkreli? A penchant for harshly trolling their enemies online and an attorney general who wants both of them banned for life from their preferred business. The ruling stemmed from an antitrust lawsuit James, the Federal Trade Commission, and six other states filed against Shkreli. James, in that case, asked Judge Arthur Engoron to ban Trump for life from the New York real estate industry and to bar his sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, from that sector for five years, along with fining them $360 million.

As part of the AUKUS agreement, US and British subs will operate out of western Australia by 2027. The deal on the base comes as rivals, mainly China, increase their submarine activity in the region. Ray Mabus, then US navy secretary, departs a Chinese Yuan-class submarine in Ningbo in November 2012. The Defense Department report also says China's six operational Jin-class nuclear-powered ballistic-missile subs are likely already conducting "near-continuous at-sea deterrence patrols," a sign that China's submarine force continues to improve its operational capabilities. For the US Navy, those developments make the ability to base subs closer to the Western Pacific a greater priority.

Most important this week is Friday's core personal consumption expenditure (PCE) price index for January. In comparison, the consumer price index (CPI), released this past week, only tracks price changes over time. The market is expecting the core PCE price index to rise 0.4% monthly and 4.9% annually. In addition to the core PCE price index, we're going to be looking closely at the housing and utilities component. Lastly, the January producer price index came in hotter than expected, rising 0.7% from December versus expectations for 0.4% increase.

It's like the start of a joke: What do Google and slime mold have in common? A lot, says a memo from an ex-Googler comparing the org to a "slime mold." (A key difference: Stanford grads aren't desperate to intern at a slime mold.) But with ChatGPT setting off alarm bells inside and outside the org, Google should probably move faster and with more intention than slime mold. The most memorable part of the memo compares Google's bottom-up organizational structure to a "slime mold," highlighting how both Google and a slime mold can work independently but still come together to solve complex problems.

Throughout the war in Ukraine, US destroyers have continued "operating with allies and partners in the high north to put pressure on Russia, to make sure that they know that we're there with capable platforms," Gilday added. The British Royal Navy followed suit this spring, sending HMS Prince of Wales into the Arctic for seven weeks — the first Arctic deployment for the UK's new Queen Elizabeth-class carriers. By sending the carrier that far north, the Royal Navy sought "to push the boundaries of UK carrier operations in the cold, harsh environment," the ship's commanding officer said. British Royal NavyHMS Prince of Wales' deployment reflects the British navy's increasing investment in Arctic operations. In 2020, the British navy "recommenced" routine operations in the Arctic, according to the UK's updated Arctic strategy, released in March.
Investors have been rotating into tech and communication services stocks, which they see as defensive, Bank of America said Tuesday. BofA said clients last week sold stocks in all sectors except for tech and comm services. In the last two months, investors have been shifting out of cyclical sectors and into defensive ones, and inflows into tech and communication services have been outpacing defensive inflows. BofA last week highlighted downbeat demand commentary from tech companies. Higher interest rates can cut into the value of future profits made by tech and other growth companies.
